History of Horse Racing in Northamptonshire & Towcester Racecourse
It all began back in 1876 when Empress Elizabeth of Austria and her entourage of royal guests decided to rent a property at Easton Neston for the purposes of enjoying a spot of hunting in the area, renowned at the time for its excellent hunting. Amongst the locals from the upper echelons of society who played host to Empress Elizabeth was the Duke of Grafton who placed his pack of foxhounds at the Empress’s disposal.
The Empress was impressed by the whole experience. As a result, she suggested that a race meeting should be held at Easton Neston, every year. And so it came to pass that, on Easter Monday 1876, the first race meeting was held at Easton Neston. From then on, the race meeting became a hugely popular annual event, to be held every Easter Monday.
Towcester Racecourse, as we broadly know it today, came into being in 1928. The racecourse is run according to National Hunt Rules. A permanent grandstand was erected (and extended in the late 1930s). The direction of the racecourse was also reversed when the grandstand was updated.
Horse racing at Easton was halted briefly during the war years (the buildings were used by the army for storage). However, in 1946, horse racing resumed at Towcester Racecourse. Since then, things have never looked back; there have been many improvements, over the years, and today Towcester racecourse hosts 17 National Hunt meetings, each year.
Horse Racing in Northamptonshire at Towcester Racecourse can be enjoyed by all of the family and adds another activity to all of the great things that will make your stay in Northamptonshire so enjoyable.
